The Jig is Up

Hi. I’m @AlxndrCampbell.

Well, I’m not him, but I’ve played an interpretation of him on Twitter and Facebook for just over two years now.

Who am I? I’m more than likely not anyone you know or have ever heard of. I’m not a recognized face or name, I’m not even a Bible Belter.

I’ll let your disappointment sink in for a moment.

So, the short version of me goes thusly: I’m from Phoenix, AZ, a Harding University survivor, a current Fuller Seminary M.Div student, a ten-year veteran as a Church-o-Christ minister in every capacity (from youth, to associate, to senior), a current church planter in downtown Phoenix, etc.

I began the @Alxndrcampbell account a just over two years ago on twitter for completely personal reasons. After working for a church that took itself much too seriously, I needed a way to express to my friends some frustrations and some humor that I found in the often ridiculous situations I was either witness to, or victim in. I had no clue other people would connect with anything I had to write, and it wasn’t ever my intention to do anything other than just express myself via one of the great fellows on whose shoulders our tribe currently stands.

Apparently, at least some of what I wrote resonated. It spoke to something that more people than just I was experiencing or feeling. That was a surprise to me. Even more of a surprise was that all corners of the Restoration Movement began to jump into the conversation; my brothers and sisters from the Disciples, the Christian Churches, and us crazies from the CoC. That was pretty awesome to get to see.

But, two plus years, and 1,000+ followers on both Twitter and Facebook later, I feel like it’s time to wrap this thing up.

I write this to thank you for playing along, and for allowing me to use bad puns, rehashed jokes, and belabored satire. Thanks for letting me work out the plank in my own eye, and for joining in doing the same. Thanks for the ONE angry message that I received, calling me a hack and a bad human being (our church tradition of cannibalism lives on!).

Thanks for putting up with me.

Over the summer, I’ll be posting some of the most highlighted experiences and revelations I had from this experiment. If there is a tweet or comment that you’d like to know the background on, let me know, and I’ll see if I can work it into a post.

If you’d like to follow me in the reals, I’d enjoy your company in my own continuing journey…

  13. As a Disciple of Christ – who grew up and lived IN PHOENIX until nine months ago, I might add – I’ve greatly enjoyed the Alexander Campbell Twitter. Thanks for the entertainment!

  17. Funny, I never thought I would have met one of “the founders”. Sorry to hear the fun will be going away. You spoke for a lot of people.
